Makadara Monthly Meeting

Friends Church Makadara started as a village meeting in 1962 with 26 members most of whom were from Makadara estate and its environs. Today the church has 600 registered members’ inclusive of Sunday school.

At that time the church did not have a permanent place from where to conduct its Sunday services. The church led by Dishon Munyole as its first Presiding Clerk approached the Nairobi City Council to allow them to use Martin Luther Primary School situated in Makadara as their place of worship.

In 1975, Nairobi City Council directed that there will be no Sunday services of any church whatsoever that will be held in City Council-owned primary schools. This led to the termination of holding Sunday services at the said school after a period of 13 years.

In the same year, the church moved to Jericho Lumumba social hall as a new worship place for two years. At the time the church was led by James Ashihundu as the Presiding Clerk. In 1977 the church was faced with the challenge of a smaller worship place due to the increase in membership. The church then moved to a new bigger venue that is Jericho Ofafa Social hall. The church used the new place for a period of 21 years from 1977 – 1998. In 1998 the church made a final move to the current plot that the new church has been built on while working on acquisition documents.

Land Aquisition

The process of acquiring land for the church started in 1973. The then leadership of the church set a committee that was to lead the church in this matter. Some of the members who initially oversaw the search were; Newton Aluda (Chairman), Priscilla Muhanji (Secretary), Joel Miimo (Member), Gideon Shivoga (Member), Ruth Mambei (Member), Rose Samula (Member) and Francis Kutondo(Member).

Over the years land committees succeeded each other. The search for land for the church led to the identification of various plots including the current one. Finally after years of searching, in 1998 the current plot was awarded to the church under the leadership of Joel Miimo. The members immediately embarked on the construction of the first temporary structure through the fundraising spirit.

Title Deed Aquisition

The search of the title deed started in 2007 led by the Presiding Clerk, Obeda Alukhava. The leadership worked tirelessly in search of the document that will help to legitimize the construction of a permanent sanctuary by members. In February 2014 the church led by the Presiding Clerk, Wilson Ombacho successfully acquired a title deed for the plot. This meant that the members could now embark on constructing a sanctuary.

Evangelism Class

In pursuit of enhancement of spiritual growth for members, in 2009, the church established its first evangelism class that was opened by the yearly meeting and pioneered by Pastor Margaret Musalia as its principal. Consequently 29 students graduated from the evangelism class in 2011. In addition the bible class was also started in 2009. To date over 50 students have successfully passed through bible class.

Permanent Sanctuary Contruction

In 2008, members’ envisaged the idea of constructing a permanent sanctuary that was estimated to cost 47 Million shillings. In order to achieve this, members led by the leadership of the Presiding Clerk Jackson Muhalia came up with a 10 year strategic plan that was to be overseen by Robert Wamaya.

The first phase which was to cover the construction of the Pastor’s house that was completed in 2011 and the house official opened on August 22nd 2011 by the then Presiding Clerk of the Nairobi yearly meeting Churchill Kibisu.

The second phase that covered the construction of a new church and a block that was further sub-divided into two phases with phase one covering the construction of the church and phase two the construction of a three storey block. Zedekiah Anyonyi the chairman of the planning committee and his committee successfully led the church in identifying the companies that were to do actuarial plans and architectural designs respectively.

Upon the members receiving actuarial plan from Tripex and architectural design done by Space by Designs, on March 13th 2016 the church led by the Nairobi Yearly Meeting Presiding Clerk Simon Angote broke ground for the construction of the new church in a ceremony witnessed by and prayed for by the General Superintendant Pst. Aggrey Mukirima.

Funding for construction

During her tenure at the church as pastor, Pastor Margaret Musalia was the first to spear head giving towards the construction of a new church. The funds of the construction of the new church has been funded by members through donations, tithes, offerings, funds drives, guests of honours, SMEP loan with members offering their vehicles as collaterals, giving organized at zonal levels by members.

To date the church is estimated to have cost 38 Million shillings. The new church will host a worship place, a studio, church offices, an ablution block, and conference rooms among other modern facilities.
